Sand Bags
Using sand bags for flood prevention and control has been used for hundreds of years and until now, this method has never passed away especially during emergency situations. There are different materials beings used when manufacturing commercial sand bags but the most common material is the hessian. But recently, sand bags made from woven polypropylene materials have been introduced in the market and it has proven its worth to effective in controlling floods during emergency flooding.
Compared with other stuff, sand is the most effective material for sand bags especially when it is for flood control. During heavy rain, the sands are saturated making it heavier and sturdier to stand to heavy flow of water. But when this is not available, other materials can be used such as silts, gravel, clay, or a mixture of any these. However, none works better than sand itself making it the most popular options for flood defense. There are lots of uses for sandbags because aside from preventing overflowing levees, it can also be used to direct the flow of the river current to a specific area where it will be pooled. Ring dikes construction also use sand bags which is put around the boils on levees and it can also be used as a counter weight for traffic sings and other related materials. For residential homes located in a flood prone area, sand bags can also be used by the door or at the gates to prevent huge amount of water from coming in.
There is often a misunderstanding when it comes to the proper use of sand bags. Some people believe that by stacking these bags to build a wall can help block the onrush of water. But this is not entirely true. While it is possible that a wall of pyramid stacked sand bags can help prevent water from coming in, this will also require a lot of time to build. More often than not, the force of the water will be so great and it is more practical to quickly build a thin wall of sand bags with the purpose of redirecting the water current away from area to another where there is minimal damage to property and has better area coverage to hold more water. Using this approach can help prevent an entire flooding in a single area with greater risk of property damage or worse, loss of life.
When using sand bags for the purpose of preventing flood, you need to have the sturdiest material so it can stand strong against the powerful onslaught of water current. Weak sand bags are easily ripped apart by the sheer force of the water flow and once the sands begin to scatter from a small hole, it will not have the capability to remain strong and sooner or later, it will give in. This can result to a chain reaction so make sure that when you buy your sandbags, you must always be conscious about the materials and quality to ensure safety and durability.
